'Generic Hierarchy' Filesystem Mini Spy. When I browse through the files on her MP3 player in Windows. It's a generic, low end Coby device. I want to format the 32Gb storage to FAT32 but it keeps on formatting to generic hierarchical. I've heard that FAT32 is much better than generic hierarchi.

It's a bad translation on your phone.

I would think with the continued increase spec's of these smartphones. At some point were gonna have to see that fixed. Or maybe exfat does that.? Dunno/ don't remember I gotta nice class10 64 gb 10 Mb/s card. Seems to be fine they me my phone can only really do class 6. So it's good enough.

It just goes back to the generic hierarchical file system. Another thing I've tried is format it with the Disk Manager and with the Command Prompt (format /FS:FAT32) but since the mp3 isn't a volume or a disk (like C or D) but a Portable Device (as it says in Explorer) it doesn't work. I also tried some formatting software but as in the Disk Manager the mp3 doesn't show because it's a portable device and not a disk. Anyone know how I can solve this?

Seems to be fine they me my phone can only really do class 6. So it's good enough. Is it possible NTFS or another partition might be better and work with android. Or it's just basically fat32 every time? F2FS works very well if your ROM supports it. ExFAT is also very good (but patent encumbered), while ext2/3/4 work well too. The patent (US 8321439) on exFAT seem to have taken even Microsoft by surprise when it was granted, as there isn't anything there that's not obvious or was already happening in CP/M, FAT12/16/32, HPFS or NTFS (prior-art).
Just now I took a 500MB Seagate 'pocket' USB-powered mechanical HDD, formatted it with a single NTFS partition under Windows 7, and then plugged it into my ASUS Transformer Infinity TF700T tablet/netbook. Everything is bone stock; no root kits, no special anything. The big USB drive auto-mounted and showed me files. It's just a basic test, but it shows that at least one Android device can deal with: • USB hard disks with more capacity than any SD card. • Windows partitions including exFAT and NTFS. • Auto recognition and auto mounting of all the above. This is good news because it shows that at least some Android devices come right out of the box with the ability to use media that's thought of as 'computer peripherals'.
Anyone know how I can solve this? Help is appreciated! Worth a read.

What language is your phone set to? As many other posters have said, Generic hierarchical is not a file system that exists, and it most certainly isn't HFS.
For a 512-byte allocation, the average unused space is 256 bytes. For 64 KB clusters, the average unused space is 32 KB. The size of the allocation unit is chosen when the file system is created. Choosing the allocation size based on the average size of the files expected to be in the file system can minimize the amount of unusable space. Frequently the default allocation may provide reasonable usage. Choosing an allocation size that is too small results in excessive overhead if the file system will contain mostly very large files.
It stores four types of records. Each file consists of a File Thread Record and a File Record while each directory consists of a Directory Thread Record and a Directory Record.
When the system needed to read data, the user was instructed to press 'PLAY' on the cassette recorder. The system would listen to the sounds on the tape waiting until a burst of sound could be recognized as the synchronization. The system would then interpret subsequent sounds as data. This worked well with a system with a few hundred kilobytes of storage and perhaps a hundred files, but as the systems grew into megabytes and thousands of files, the performance degraded rapidly. The solution was to replace MFS's directory structure with one more suitable to larger file systems. HFS replaced the flat table structure with the Catalog File which uses a structure that could be searched very quickly regardless of size. HFS also re-designed various structures to be able to hold larger numbers, 16-bit integers being replaced by 32-bit almost universally.

Hello, I just found my old Samsung K5 (mp3 player) and after a bunch of attempts trying to upgrade the firmware I couldn't copy any files to the mp3, neither from the explorer nor from Samsung's software. Somehow the mp3 was formatted to a file system called generic hierarchical and I assume that is why i can't copy any files because before, when it was formatted with FAT32, I didn't have any trouble copying files. Therefore I want to reformat the mp3 back to FAT32. I've tried right clicking the samsung mp3 icon in explorer and hit format and I've also tried format it with Samsung's software without any succeed.

Each allocation block on the volume is represented by a bit in the map: if the bit is set then the block is in use; if it is clear then the block is free to be used.
When disks were small, this was of little consequence, because the individual allocation block size was trivial, but as disks started to approach the 1 GB mark, the smallest amount of space that any file could occupy (a single allocation block) became excessively large, wasting significant amounts of disk space. For example, on a 1 GB disk, the allocation block size under HFS is 16 KB, so even a 1 byte file would take up 16 KB of disk space.
The file system is supported with newer Windows systems, such as Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, and more recently, support has been added for Windows XP. ExFAT is supported in macOS starting with version 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard). Support in other operating systems is sparse since Microsoft has not published the specifications of the file system and implementing support for exFAT requires a license.
