Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has firmly established himself as one of this generation's premier players in jazz and beyond. Hargrove was born in Waco, TX on October 16, 1969. Inspired by the gospel music he heard in church on Sundays and the R&B and funk music that played on the radio, Roy began learning the trumpet in the fourth grade.

This album, and the three succeeding recordings Hargrove made for the Novus label, were among the most commercially successful jazz recordings of the early 1990s, and made the young trumpeter one of the music ’s hottest properties. Still, unimpressed by stardom, Hargrove continued to develop his craft by performing with jazz giants such as saxophonist and trumpeter. As Hargrove ’s talents as a soloist matured, so did his strength as a bandleader. During the early 1990s Hargrove experimented with a variety of personnel, trying to build a tightly focused ensemble. As he told Rocky Mountain News writer Provizer, “No matter how many people you have in a group, you need to think as one. ” In 1992 he laid the foundation for future groups by hiring bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, who together comprised one of the finest rhythm units in modern jazz. By the release of 1993 ’s Of Kindred Souls, Hargrove ’s exacting taste and hard work had paid off: in the words of Chronicle writer Derk Richardson, he had found “the kind of unified group feeling that has distinguished the most fondly remembered acoustic jazz units, from the -Clifford Brown Quintet, through the classic bands of the 1960s.

Hard Groove is the realization of a musical dream come true. The RH Factor is the identity that composer/arranger Hargrove has coined for the musical collective he's assembled for Hard Groove. Like a 21st Century Quincy Jones, the trumpeter has brought together a diverse array of musicians from his recent collaborative efforts to create an organic musical street party at the corner of hip-hop and bop, encompassing many of his musical passions-the slow-grinding soul of Funkadelic's 'I'll Stay' with a sultry vocal by D'Angelo; Common's free-styled rap intro on the aptly titled 'Common Free Style'; both Q-Tip and Erykah Badu bringing their distinctive hip-hop and R&B sounds to the party-like funk of 'Poetry'.

Mathews' potent 'Salima's Dance, first recorded by the pianist back in the late '70s, is more than worthy of revival. Hargrove lets loose on this modal composition with his most incendiary solo of the date, followed by Robinson, Hampton and the composer, each one equally electrifying. A series of exchanges with Jones and a collective improvisation by the horns drive the music to a compelling climax.
In June of 1995 Hargrove released Family, his second recording for Verve. As the title suggests, the album paid tribute to the musicians and relatives who played a significant role in the trumpeter's life.
Add young bassist Danton Bolder and the excellent drummer, and you have a band that can bring 's music fully to life. It is said that everyone learns from their mistakes, but if that is true, has gone far beyond the pale, and is flawless here, in terms of both concept and execution. The CD comes out of the box with four home runs -- an ultra hip contemporary version of the tune 'I Am Not So Sure,' a sweet 7/8 beat for 'Brown' with outstanding piano from, 'Strasbourg/St.
As Times writer Richard B. Woodward put it, his solos are a “string of sentences that read as paragraphs. Hargrove was surrounded by music from an early age, but it was his elementary and high school band director, Dean Hill, who sparked his interest in a performing career. Hill not only guided Hargrove ’s development as an improviser, but introduced him to a variety of great jazz musicians, including David “Fathead ” Newman, a legendary sax player who many years later joined Hargrove on his eighth album, Family. While working with Hill, Hargrove discovered the music of Clifford Brown, a brilliant trumpeter who recorded extensively in the 1950s; he died at age 25. It was Brown ’s example, Hargrove told Rocky Mountain News writer Norman Provizer, that gave the young trumpeter confidence in his own musical gifts. “That was the key that opened the door for me, ” he recalled.

It isn't so much that they did anything wrong; the mastering, mixing, mike balances, and sound are good throughout this session. But Hargrove senses that something has been missing in the music for RCA/Novus dates. There is a low-key feel to much of this music, even on tunes where he is doing superb technical maneuvering. Hargrove's discs are improving at an amazing pace.

I have been unable to find that roster for that particular festival and since it was long ago I remember mostly Monk & Duke. Paul Gonsalvas played his legendary trademark twenty something chorus solo in between Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue which was outstanding. The first jazz record I bought was Firstly, my Bro George was / is a Marine and he sent home his wax collection of LP's from Camp Pendleton CA before deploying to Okinawa in 1956 I think. Bird, Getz, Mulligan & Baker, Erroll Garner, Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Jazz at Newport 1956 and many more. I fell in love with Bird, Getz and Jeru & Chet for openers. Pres to my mind takes the all time Tenor Award and Budo, Piano etc.! However I digress Getz Long Island Sound and every other Getz record that I could find that was 1957 by then and I snuck in to Birdland for the First of many times before I was 18 ( Legal drinking age back then) It wasn't until just after my 18th Birthday that I was carded much to the bouncers chagrin as he recognized me as having being an established customer by then.
