The only two exceptions to this are: During extraction, SAPCAR checks the file name extensions of the archives you want to extract from. The extensions '.CAR' and '.SAR' are both valid. The option '-s' for checking the free space on the target filesystem is only valid for displaying the contents of an archive. The option is no longer valid for extracting files.

I decided to write a little program that catches the SAPCAR output and analyses it. You can use it as a SAPCAR GUI. I am not a programmer, and I wrote this in very old environment, just to make sure it will work on most WIN OS-es. Disclaimer: This is NOT official SAP software and it is NOT bug free.
By creating the directory C: usr sap PRFCLOG, and releasing the directory sap as a share with the name saploc. Copy the archive SAPHOSTAGENT.SAR to a temporary directory (e.g C: temp saphostagent.sar). Decompress the SAPHOSTAGENT.SAR archive with the SAPCAR tool. Use always the newest available SAPCAR release compatible to your operating system. You can download a patched version of SAPCAR from the SAP Service Marketplace: -> Support Packages and Patches -> Browse Our Download Catalog -> Additional Components -> SAPCAR. Then add the SAPCAR version for your OS to the Download Basket. Note that the downloadable file is tagged with the.exe extension for all OS platforms because of software center naming conventions. On UNIX platforms you have to delete the extension and to rename the file to SAPCAR because this is the official tool name which is known by other SAP tools on UNIX platforms. The downloadable file is not compressed so you may run it without extracting it before. As of R/3 Release 4.6C, the new archiving tool SAPCAR replaces the previous archiving tool CAR.

In the past SAP developed the tool and named it CAR. The extensions of all compressed files were named '.CAR' as well. In SAP release 4.6C SAP decided to enhance the functionality of the CAR utility a bit. Therefore, the internal structure of the compressed files slightly changed. Because of this, it was necessary to create a new extension. There the new extension '.SAR' was born and the new utility was named SAPCAR. The new SAPCAR utility can work with both formats (.CAR &.SAR).

Add it to the “Download Basket” by following to procedure mentioned before. To check the content of the download basket, click on the link “my DOWNLOAD BASKET” from the left-hand side menu which will open a screen with all the components we have added to the basket (figure 2.33). In this scenario, there will be three files – SAPCAR, HANA Studio, and HANA Client. From the above screen, we need to take the cursor to one file at a time, right-click, and then select “Save Target As” and save it to the desired location which in this case is the desktop. Repeat the procedure for saving the HANA Studio and HANA Client file on the desktop as well. After we minimize the browser window, we should see the three files downloaded on our desktop. So, this is the way that we can get the content from service market place in order to install the SAP HANA Client or the Studio on a Windows Box which is connecting to a HANA server on a Linux Machine.

Anyway, thanks for your comment. I am sure one day someone better than me will write much better GUI, or even SAP themselves. Best regards ILIAN.

And so it makes sense that they would prefer.SAR (SAP archive) to.CAR (maybe 'compressed archive'? Or in German?) SAPCAR.EXE already has 'SAP' clearly identified. Hi, The SAP program 'sapcar.exe' is SAP's own compression tool. The old program used to be called 'car' and the newer tool is called 'sapcar.exe'. There is no real difference between a 'car' and 'sar' the files are decompressed with the following syntax: sapcar -xfv.car sapcar -xvf.sar This syntax is explained in many sap notes, I have found the help attached to the sapcar.exe program very helpfull. As the binaries are different for each platform, you should have a look at the following link to the releases 4.6D and higher as SAPCAR became available with 4.6C: - Go to the directory where you want to list the contents via the 'cd' command - SAPCAR -tvsf (or car -tvsf ) On AS/400: SAPCAR '-tvsf ' - Then the complete contents of the file is listed on the screen. - If you want further detailed information, have a look in the below. - Go to the directory where you want to decompress via the 'cd' command - SAPCAR -xvf (or car -xvf ) On AS/400: SAPCAR '-xvf ' - Then all files and directories, that are stored in this archive, become decompressed. - If you want further detailed information, have a look in the below. - Go to the directory where you want to compress via the 'cd' command - SAPCAR -cvf (or * for all) (or car -cvf ) On AS/400: SAPCAR '-cvf ' - Then this one file or all of the current directory becomes stored to this archive - If you want further detailed information, have a look in the below.
At the end of this tutorial, you will know: • • • • • • To Install on a Windows System, we will first install the client which provides connectivity from the windows box to the HANA Server. On top of the client, we can install HANA Studio which provides a graphical user interface to create tables, create view, and so on and so forth. So, first we will download the client files, then we will download studio files, and then we will download SAPCAR which is a utility tool to expand those downloaded files, and finally, we will install the files. To start installing the application, we have to first go to “Internet Explorer”.

But it is not possible to create CAR archives with SAPCAR. • On some platforms, SAPCAR requires certain dynamic C++ program libraries. These libraries are possibly not part of the standard installation of your operating system. In this case, you need to install them before using SAPCAR. Possible platforms where manual installation of these C++ runtime libraries may be required, are: SunOS 5.6 (Solaris 2.6): You possibly need to install the latest patch that includes the package SUNWlibC.
Because of this, it was necessary to create a new extension. There the new extension '.SAR' was born and the new utility was named SAPCAR. The new SAPCAR utility can work with both formats (.CAR &.SAR). The older version CAR can only decompress.CAR files. So, it is advisable to switch - even in older releases - to the newer toolkit named SAPCAR, because SAP sometimes delivers even for older releases SAR Files already. You can download the latest version of the CAR or SAPCAR in the SAP Service Marketplace.

So, it is not useful to compress.CAR or.SAR files with Winzip, because you would no longer benefit with shrinking down in the size. SAPCAR and CAR are both command line based tools. The syntax is similar to the in the unix enviroment used TAR utility (tar -xvf.). There does not exist a graphical interface as used to from WinZip. Difference between CAR and SAR Files In the past SAP developed the tool and named it CAR.
