I know pretty graphics are verboten on this forum, but when you're playing a simulation of an activity that heavily relies on the eyeballs (spotting ships on the ocean, specifically), you're going to be staring at the graphics quite often. It's only sensible to make them kinda pretty, especially since stock SH3 looks rather ass for a 2005 game. And now I shall regale you with my so-far brief and nearly uneventful career. After completing most the the training missions and failing a few scenario battles, I decided to dive into career mode. I joined the 1st Fleet in August, 1939, which is basically easy mode - you get the smallest, crappiest U-boat (Type IIA), and nobody's actually shooting at you yet or really capable of shooting at you. The mod enabler is installed with GWX. You need some cfg files for the Commander if you use it with GWX. Some extra pack with emblems for your boat, there are both realistic and fantasy packs. GWX commes with a lot of extras to flavor the game as you like;). SH3 Commander (although not strictly a mod) and GWX 3.0 are essential, there are other 'supermods' such as Living Silent Hunter 3, NYGM etc but GWX is the best overall experience in my opinion.

LSH3 has great eye candy but was too easy for my taste. LSH3 must add more convoys and ships. One patrol I ran into 6 convoys. Playing with LSH was the only time I would bypass ships without a thought because I was certain I would run into another ship with more tonnage.
World Merchant Fleet
Unlike stock, this mod focuses on the Atlantic side of the war, and various operations involving the British navy and RAF. The mod gives you operations of the British navy in the North Atlantic, British Isles, North Sea, Bay of Biscay, and Norway, and there's a good chance you'll encounter atleast one of these during your time as a Uboat commander. RAF bases and airtraffic have been redone, and bases assigned historicly. Also Uboat start points such as Kiel are back, and you can also be deployed to forward bases in France and Norway. This mod comes in 4 parts, which also include an upgrade, patch and hotfix, and it's important you install them in the right order.
