I have had success with MESS systems with both the latest MAME core or MESS2014. You can use MAME provided the MAME version is higher than 0.162, which is when MAME and MESS merged. Using the latest MAME core usually works. You can also use MESS2014, but that core isn’t available for all systems. Here’s the steps to get it to work: • Get the core MAME (latest) or MESS2014 • Create the folder ‘mame/hash’ or ‘mess2014/hash’ in your retroarch bios/system directory • Download the hash file for your system of interest and put it in the hash folder. OK, I've tried what little I can find on the net, I've tried reading the source code and I've tried blind guesswork and I cannot get anything other than 'Unknow [sic] or unsupported romset' with gngeo as part of Retroarch. I have tried several different bios roms, I have checked the files that the source code is looking for are there, and I have tried both keeping the files zipped and unzipping them. No matter what I try I get that error.

It's a bit of nightmare yes, but as soon as you get the fact that Retropie has set emulators, and it's all about finding the right roms and correct bioses (if applicable) things get easier. OK, I had one more go at this before I went to bed. I downloaded the 0.2.97.39 FBA ROMset and I just don't get it. The file was about 800MB, I used Keka to extract it but when I opened it it's just a bunch of zip files registering at zero bytes and some a readme file about patched ROMs that I have no clue what it is talking about. Can someone just explain to me in basic terms what I am supposed to do?
I moved the romrc.d folder to where it was expecting to find it, replaced the RetroArch gngeo binary with the one I compiled and voila! Everything is now working as expected.
You don’t need the zip rom file, but they’re typically part of the set, so why not have them? The other option I have found works, is you can make a dummy / empty file with the same name (just an empty text file, then rename to 2020bb.zip) and that also works if you want to save a little space. I understand you’re using Rocketlauncher, but if you really want to save space, take a look at my Kodi addon: plugin.program.iarl - Internet Archive ROM Launcher (IARL) will download ROMs from the Internet Archive and launch them with Kodi. Brilliant, making use of the save folder I could now keep all my custom bindings, and other configs, I can fast forward the long loading times to match the cartridge loads, and have all the nice CD tracks and extras that only the CD versions have. While I can also have all the benefits of emulating it through Retroarch. That’s the picture I had in mind, and I thank you a lot for all your support.

I put the hash files in /system/mame/hash. The game filed I grabbed has the same name as the file you mentioned, but it was a.zip instead of a.chd. I made a backup and changed the extension to.chd, but that didn’t seem to help either. When I try loading crsword2.zip using the MAME core, all I get is the “Initializing” MAME screen.
Download the roms you want from the 0.78 folder, put them in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame2003-libretro Then copy the bios files from the archive.org romset into /home/pi/RetroPie/bios/mame2003. Just realized that I guess you need to download this seperately after looking at the 0.78 romset. I have no idea where I downloaded it from. You likely won't need it. I tried to cover the systems Retroarch doesn’t have a core for and are reasonably popular. I agree, MESS is messy. Specific to SkyHighGam3r’s questions: The files you have with.a52,.col, etc extensions are not going to work with MESS. You need to use the romset MAME/MESS is looking for.

Only problems is they don't say where they found it! I've downloaded and tried 3 versions now (only reason I know they are different is the file size), with no luck. Thanks • • • • •. It's more like you need the correct romset for the emulator Retropie uses. In this case it's generally mame2003-libretro and fba. So on the archive.org page for the 0.78 ROMset, can you tell me which ZIP file is the MAME set? They are all abbreviations. It's a gigantic collection.

Or is it that as the ROM of Metal Slug 6 that is on emuparadise says it is 0.164, then I just cannot play that on my RetroPie? I'm fine with a limited game list as long as I can just get it working. It seems weird that no one online has just given a simple explanation on how to set this up.

I’m guessing this is your real problem. The chd file linked in IARL that does work is 212 MB in size.
How to get MAME and Neo Geo games working on RetroPie seems to be one of the most popular queries online regarding RetroPie. However I cannot find any post that just explains what to do in simple terms. I have struggled with this for ages and still the only game I can get working is DoDonPachi (International) using lr-mame2003 and the Neo Geo BIOS. Other games I try just will not work. I have seen suggestions for trying different emulators but either my RetroPie does not have them, they are listed with different names or they are associated with ROM folders that I don't recognise as being for MAME or Neo Geo games.
I don’t understand the “hash” info or the CHD/zip structure going on. All the games I’m trying to use with MESS are.a52,.col,.int, etc or in the case of Neo Geo CD Bin/Cue. Then there’s the whole saving thing we need to save controls per game on this core? This is all very confusing. Hey Sky, I only use MESS to emulate NEO GEO CD, since I don’t emulate Atari 5200, etc. I totally agree with you, if Retroarch supports a system, I never use the standalone, the only exception for now is PPSSPP that wasn’t updated for over a year as far as I know, and the standalone emulator is really easy to setup, some games have their own configs, etc.
