Cheers for the help and suggestions everyone. I'm off to play some Metal Slug! Yottskry Sweet! Don’t forget, when you run a Binary or compile yourself from Source, ALWAYS run the Program first, then it will set up all the Default config Folders automatically, usually, an Install isn’t necessary and the locations can be changed later by altering the config file and/or.rc (In most cases). Also run in Console (Not 'X') for a good Performance increase! (Although I dont know how this affects Retroarch?) Some useful options to add when running Gngeo - --help (Gives Options List) --scale=2 (e.g. Scale X2 which is sufficient at 1920X1200 for FULLSCREEN in Console, anymore can’t be displayed and SLOWS rendering) --joystick (Enable Joystick Support).

Where do you get the emulator? - You can get the current version of WinKawaks at their home site.

Click to expand.did you follow blizzo & my instructions? Keep the roms zipped, easier if they are.bins, just double click the archive and see, but anyway.ROM still works, anyway, have you got the unibios unzipped in the roms folder with the zipped roms? Also did you change the config file to unibios like i said in my little tutorial.? Then once youv'e done that, press 1, 2 doesnt work, and it'l list your roms. Blizzo orite there, any news on any little bug fixes?

I have had success with MESS systems with both the latest MAME core or MESS2014. You can use MAME provided the MAME version is higher than 0.162, which is when MAME and MESS merged. Using the latest MAME core usually works. You can also use MESS2014, but that core isn’t available for all systems. Here’s the steps to get it to work: • Get the core MAME (latest) or MESS2014 • Create the folder ‘mame/hash’ or ‘mess2014/hash’ in your retroarch bios/system directory • Download the hash file for your system of interest and put it in the hash folder. In this case, your looking for neocd.

The Neo Geo is a cartridge-based arcade system board and home video game console released by SNK in 1990. See also:, There are a variety of arcade emulators available in RetroPie which can emulate Neo Geo games. There are significant differences in performance, compatibility, and configuration between them. If you're getting started with arcade emulation, start by reading. OK, I've tried what little I can find on the net, I've tried reading the source code and I've tried blind guesswork and I cannot get anything other than 'Unknow [sic] or unsupported romset' with gngeo as part of Retroarch. I have tried several different bios roms, I have checked the files that the source code is looking for are there, and I have tried both keeping the files zipped and unzipping them. No matter what I try I get that error.

You absolutely NEED the neogeo.zip bios file to run the Neo-Geo titles. You just have to put the.zip file inside one of the folders for your rom files (preferably the 'neogeo' folder). You just have to put the.zip file inside one of the folders for your rom files (preferably the 'neogeo' folder). Download neogeo zip bios kawaks 1.62 files found Uploaded on TraDownload and all major free file sharing websites like 4shared.com, uploaded.to, mediafire.com and many others. After clicking desired file title click download now button or copy download link to browser and wait certain amount of time (usually up to 30 seconds) for download to begin.

Just copy them all if you're not sure what does what, doesn't take up a ton of space. Include the samples subfolder. • Reboot Emulation Station and the roms will appear. For Neo-Geo: • Find a Neo-Geo romset (don't use the MAME one, use 0.2.97.39 FBA thank you ) • Find the Neo Geo bios (neogeo.zip file, should be in the romset), put it in the neogeo rom folder. • Copy your Neo-Geo roms over to the neogeo folder and reboot like before to see them. • If the Neo-Geo roms don't load, you have a bios for an older/different version of the emulator RetroPie uses TL;DR You need the right romset, and possibly the right bios files as well depending on the game.

It's a bit of nightmare yes, but as soon as you get the fact that Retropie has set emulators, and it's all about finding the right roms and correct bioses (if applicable) things get easier. OK, I had one more go at this before I went to bed. I downloaded the 0.2.97.39 FBA ROMset and I just don't get it. The file was about 800MB, I used Keka to extract it but when I opened it it's just a bunch of zip files registering at zero bytes and some a readme file about patched ROMs that I have no clue what it is talking about. Can someone just explain to me in basic terms what I am supposed to do?

I moved the romrc.d folder to where it was expecting to find it, replaced the RetroArch gngeo binary with the one I compiled and voila! Everything is now working as expected.

You don’t need the zip rom file, but they’re typically part of the set, so why not have them? The other option I have found works, is you can make a dummy / empty file with the same name (just an empty text file, then rename to 2020bb.zip) and that also works if you want to save a little space. I understand you’re using Rocketlauncher, but if you really want to save space, take a look at my Kodi addon: plugin.program.iarl - Internet Archive ROM Launcher (IARL) will download ROMs from the Internet Archive and launch them with Kodi. Brilliant, making use of the save folder I could now keep all my custom bindings, and other configs, I can fast forward the long loading times to match the cartridge loads, and have all the nice CD tracks and extras that only the CD versions have. While I can also have all the benefits of emulating it through Retroarch. That’s the picture I had in mind, and I thank you a lot for all your support.

I put the hash files in /system/mame/hash. The game filed I grabbed has the same name as the file you mentioned, but it was a.zip instead of a.chd. I made a backup and changed the extension to.chd, but that didn’t seem to help either. When I try loading crsword2.zip using the MAME core, all I get is the “Initializing” MAME screen.

Download the roms you want from the 0.78 folder, put them in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame2003-libretro Then copy the bios files from the archive.org romset into /home/pi/RetroPie/bios/mame2003. Just realized that I guess you need to download this seperately after looking at the 0.78 romset. I have no idea where I downloaded it from. You likely won't need it. Then copy the samples folder from your 0.78 romset to /home/pi/RetroPie/bios/mame2003/samples Hope this helps.

Hash files can be found here: I find it’s easier just to get all the hash files if your interested in more than one system, to help I zipped up all the hash files from github as of today (Nov 10, 2016). You can get it. • Create a folder in your roms directory that matches exactly the name that MAME / MESS is looking for from the hash file. This is tricky sometimes because the folder name isn’t always what you think it should be. In the case of Neo CD for example, the folder should be named ‘neocdz’. Here’s a good list I’ve started: [ul] [li]Apple 2GS: Name the folder ‘apple2gs’[/li][li]CDi: Name the folder ‘cdimono’[/li][li]ColecoVision: Name the folder ‘coleco’[/li][li]Commodore 64: Name the folder ‘c64’[/li][li]NeoGeo CD: Name the folder ‘neocdz’[/li][li]PC98: Name the folder ‘pc9821’[/li][li]Sharp X1: Name the folder ‘x1’[/li][li]Sony x68000: Name the folder ‘x68000’[/li][/ul] Let’s say your folder path to roms is ‘/HOME/ROMS/MAME/neocdz/’ • Put your rom files in the folder ‘/HOME/ROMS/MAME/neocdz/’, including the bios file(s). For example, the neocd game “2020 Super Baseball (Jpn, USA)”, I have the following files: 2020bb.zip (software name file) 2020 super baseball (1995)(snk)(jp-us)[!].chd (disk name file) neocd.zip (bios file) neocdz.zip (bios file) neogeo.zip (bios file) The non-bios files required for each game are listed in the hash file and they need to be the exact filename.

I’m intimately familiar with making MESS inside of retroarch work for all the systems I listed, as they’re included in my Kodi addon (IARL) where I try to automate launching the game. I’d be happy to try to expound on the explanation I gave for a sticky guide. I’d be happy to even try other systems that MESS supports. I tried to cover the systems Retroarch doesn’t have a core for and are reasonably popular. I agree, MESS is messy. Specific to SkyHighGam3r’s questions: The files you have with.a52,.col, etc extensions are not going to work with MESS. You need to use the romset MAME/MESS is looking for.

LIMITATIONS COMPARED TO MVS/AES Universe BIOS ------------------------------------------------------------- • Does not currently support high score saving. • There is no jukebox player, use the Bios CD music payer. • 68000 error trapping is not yet included. MVS/AES BIOS SWITCH --------------------------- The CD UNIVERSE BIOS also contains an altered MVS/AES UNIVERSE BIOS.

FEATURES ------------ • Brings the CDZ style radio screen to Top and Front Loaders. • Slightly faster loading on Top and Front Loaders (hardly noticeable but it's there). • The in game menu has all the features of the MVS/AES Universe Bios. • An MVS/AES BIOS SWITCH option (see below). • Disables CD protection (failing CD drives work in some cases). LIMITATIONS COMPARED TO MVS/AES Universe BIOS ------------------------------------------------------------- • Does not currently support high score saving. • There is no jukebox player, use the Bios CD music payer.

Only problems is they don't say where they found it! I've downloaded and tried 3 versions now (only reason I know they are different is the file size), with no luck. One of the pages I've seen specifically talk about my 037b5-set and that you should get a neogeo.zip file which is 853kb. But I can't find it! Do you know if there is a place with several neogeo.zip-files/version? I seem to stumble across either the wrong ones or end up getting spammed on some strange websites. Said in: Thanks.

Thanks • • • • •. It's more like you need the correct romset for the emulator Retropie uses. In this case it's generally mame2003-libretro and fba. So on the archive.org page for the 0.78 ROMset, can you tell me which ZIP file is the MAME set? They are all abbreviations. It's a gigantic collection.

Your directory would then look like.path_to_retroarch_system_directory/system (folder) neocdz.zip (BIOS file) neogeo.zip (BIOS file) 2) Ensure you have the right Game Files Your ISO game files will include an iso, cue, and mp3 (or wav) files. FBAlpha does not currently support CHD format. For example if I wanted to play League Bowling, the files would include.path_to_retroarch_game_directory/Neo Geo CD Games (folder) League Bowling.cue (CUE file) League Bowling.iso (ISO file) League Bowling 02.wav (WAV audio file) 3a) Play from Retroarch From the Retroarch GUI, select Load Core, then choose Arcade (FBAlpha) Now back in the Retroarch GUI, select Load Content, then choose the ISO file. Note the load may fail the first time you try it. If it does, now you’ll see a new list of Subsystem Load selections in the Retroarch GUI, select Load Neogeo CD Browse and select the ISO file (in this example League Bowling.iso) and then Start NeoGeo CD. 3b) Play from the Command Line You can load the game (by pointing to the CUE file) from the command line as follows, by adding the “–subsystem neocd” argument: (Windows Command for MAME) '. Path_to_program retroarch.exe' -L '.

It should also be possible to load data into memory from CD (using the CD UNIVERSE BIOS) and then switching to the MVS/AES bios. Note that the systems memory spec is a limiting factor in the size of data that can be loaded. That aside this makes the CD system a good development testing tool for small game projects. This is a great upgrade to CD systems. The NBM for the NeoCD is very easy to install. I should have instructions finished in a day or two.

I hope this points you in the right direction. Yottskry Yes it is frustrating (I still have yet to determine which Revision/Fork of MAME GnGeo 0.7 is!

Or is it that as the ROM of Metal Slug 6 that is on emuparadise says it is 0.164, then I just cannot play that on my RetroPie? I'm fine with a limited game list as long as I can just get it working. It seems weird that no one online has just given a simple explanation on how to set this up.

I’m guessing this is your real problem. The chd file linked in IARL that does work is 212 MB in size.

How to get MAME and Neo Geo games working on RetroPie seems to be one of the most popular queries online regarding RetroPie. However I cannot find any post that just explains what to do in simple terms. I have struggled with this for ages and still the only game I can get working is DoDonPachi (International) using lr-mame2003 and the Neo Geo BIOS. Other games I try just will not work. I have seen suggestions for trying different emulators but either my RetroPie does not have them, they are listed with different names or they are associated with ROM folders that I don't recognise as being for MAME or Neo Geo games.

I don’t understand the “hash” info or the CHD/zip structure going on. All the games I’m trying to use with MESS are.a52,.col,.int, etc or in the case of Neo Geo CD Bin/Cue. Then there’s the whole saving thing we need to save controls per game on this core? This is all very confusing. Hey Sky, I only use MESS to emulate NEO GEO CD, since I don’t emulate Atari 5200, etc. I totally agree with you, if Retroarch supports a system, I never use the standalone, the only exception for now is PPSSPP that wasn’t updated for over a year as far as I know, and the standalone emulator is really easy to setup, some games have their own configs, etc.

Music / Soundtrack / and Completionist-itis are usually the only reason you might want to try and emulate this system for any particular game. You can also emulate NeoCD with MAME/MESS and the proper MAME romset/chd set. See the guide on how to use that core. That being said, here’s how you can do it with FBAlpha. Setup 1) Get the latest FBAlpha core Download the latest “Arcade (FB Alpha)” core from the Retroarch Online Updater 2) Put BIOS files in Retroarch System Directory Place the BIOS files neogeo.zip and neocdz.zip into your system directory.

Arcade emulators require a specific romset. Get the right romset, and your game loads.

Or are there different neogeo.zip-files, so that I may require a certain one for the 037b5-roms (and if that is the case, can somebody help me find it?). I hope you can help. I have googled a lot now, and there should be a neogeo.zip that works with the 037b5- mame roms. I've seen several post saying that they found one that works.
