Windows 95/98/se/me Ram Limitation Patch
The more RAM, the worse the problem. I currently have 1176924KB (1149MB, 1.122GB) of actual usable Windows memory reported from Windows Properties without any special patches installed. I've never seen Windows work so fast! Generic hierarchical file system software. My mobo has 1.5GB installed.

There's many lurkers like me who sometimes troll a little for fun and to tease the other trolls. But the so-called serious minded like Mr. Pemberton always apprecaite the news too evn when stretched a little off-topic as long as it serves some on-topic purpose. Thank you and give 'em hell over there in kindergarden or wherever it is these guys think they are. I have an MS-DOS website that has been pretty much parked while I mess with older retro websites that I have.
For example, my 98SE computer is set at 'MaxFileCache=457216'. When you open and then close programs on your computer, Windows 98SE will save or cache the closed programs in memory, up to the 'MaxFileCache' entry (making reloading faster for these previously closed programs).
PatchPae2.exe -type kernel -o ntoskrnx.exe ntoskrnl.exe, which should look like this.
That depends on two factors: the amount of memory your computer can handle, and the amount of memory your Windows operating system (OS) can handle. First, your computer is designed to hold a maximum amount of RAM.
Windows 7 has 64bit and 32bit, a hardware limitation of 32bit is that it can only read 4GB RAM for your system. Does Windows 98 (I'll call it W98 from now on) have any hardware limitations?

1600Mhz 9cas is the 'standard' of Windows 7 real-time performance because application load times almost cap at that point. What is the RAM frequency standard for W98 and how many GB of DDR3/2 can be used?
If one has in his Windows installation in the setup so with ticked appears after overwrite the old vmm32.vxd at every boot the following message: (image). If this error occurs, you should uninstall the input help and he's gone. ------------- If you get some sort of error (in German) after placing the new vmm32.vxd and vmm.vxd files on your system, it's because you need to add enable.vxd to your system vmm32 directory. See the first post in this thread about where to download that file (it can be extracted from the original win-98 CD cab files as well).

I thought that I read that it did.

NT wars, and we're *really* tired of them by now. Moreover, people here have, along the years, solved most of the problems of 9x/ME well enough for it to allow a very good level of usability. The RAM limitation and the 48-bit limitations are fully solved and the Resources issue is very much under control, by now.
Depending on your setup, this can limit the amount of RAM your system can support to somewhere around 3GB — although it could be slightly higher or slightly lower. A technique called physical address extension, or PAE, can allow a 32-bit OS to support up to 64GB of RAM. By increasing the physical address size from 32 bits to 36, there are plenty more addresses available for the system to use — but the system’s virtual addresses stay the same, ensuring that everything works just as it should. How Can I Tell If I Need PAE? Whether or not you need to utilize PAE will come down to two important factors; are you running a, and how much of your installed RAM is usable? To establish both, open up Control Panel, and navigate to System and Security > System. If you see something similar to the above, then you’re already sorted. However, if the System type reads 32-bit Operating System and there’s a bracketed entry stipulating how much of your RAM is usable, following the result given for Installed memory, you’ll need to make use of PAE in order to Is your laptop old, slow, and has the hardware never been upgraded?
Why Am I Limited to 4GB of RAM? The reason behind the so-called ‘3GB barrier’ lies in the architecture of 32-bit operating systems. Each individual byte of RAM has its own physical address that the system uses to access particular units of memory. 32-bit systems have a limit on the amount of addresses available for RAM and various other components.
I will soon post (via file-locker ) an english-language version of VMM32.vxd that has been patched the same way this german one was. But at the moment, I'm using this german patch for the past 2 days and don't notice anything regarding the language difference. > >> They also have that 'hidden' project for Windows 98/SE which they > >> almost never mention or discuss in the main thread, like they're > >> trying to keep it a secret, which is *only* available to those > >> who join MSFN and develop.

While I do always advocate the use of Virtual Machines for classic computing, it has it's disadvantages. Some programs don't like to run on emulators or they won't deliver the same experience as opposed to the actual system.
The operators of that German site illegally hacked an early version of my Patch. 98 Guy is an Internet Troll that has been promoting this Warez version for years. Dencorso knew that it was Warez and banned 98 Guy.
Ram Limitation Patch
I just pick which OS I want to boot from and limit my 2GB of RAM to 512MB in Windows 98 by modifying MSCONFIG. On my main desktop I have partitions for 98, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP (I have a TB hard disk drive). I have Windows 95 on my other machines because it won't work with the 2.4GHz in this one due to the NDIS issue.
It's not a secret. ========== Kext: DIY KernelEx extensions A collection of tools for extending KernelEx ========== Your impression that KernelX has been dormant or not pursued has, to some extent (I believe large extent) been replaced by using these stubs and tools (like import-patcher). At a later stage, they decided to shrink some internal tables to save space. This is what limits the amount of RAM. There was a bug, but it didn't come into play until 1.4GB.

Looking at the list Dencorso assembled, you can see that the people who used a large XMSDSK in their setup ended up with a much lower setting for MaxFileCache. This limits RAMDISKs to not much more than 512MB so they can't be used to support 2GB of RAM without using MaxPhysPage.

Kstub is only 5KB or 20KB maximum with the other files: It appears an off-MSFN link is on this page now. The link seems dead though: Internet Wayback archive archived that page, but doesn't have kstub zip either. Rod Pemberton 98 Guy 17/5/2014, 15:03 น. Forget it; if you really need a Windows 8 machine then buy any old junk from eBay for a few dollars. Just make a virtual machine using VMware Player or VirtualBox.
It is described in, although MS doesn't mention SYSTEM.CB (which is needed for Safe Mode) and suggests using MaxFileCache=524288 (which has been demonstrated by practice to be too much in many occasions). This is one approach that does work. Or Install, without ever having to edit either SYSTEM.INI or SYSTEM.CB.
As time goes on we'll learn more about how this patch originated, but it seems to have been circulating in German-language windows forums up until now. Thanks to Dencorso and his obtuse and irrational censorship as he lords over the Windows-98 Forums at MSFN.org, he indicated that such a German patch existed, and he labeled it as 'warez'.
I appreciate your efforts in both making this available and in your excellent and detailed hilarious but sad stories of what is happening in other forums. As ever, moderated groups don't work and haven't worked since the BBS days. But since they too have lots of info coming-in that is useful to the rest of us, if those of us who share info freely are made aware of info like yours it will not get lost. Mission accomplished so far:) Guy wrote: >> Once Dencorso found out about that thread, he removed his own MSFN post where he described his censorship of the topic. This method is working even with the Win9x installation process. Now I don't need to remove DIMMs if I want to reinstall WinME. The unofficial service pack (as early as v1.2 ) already includes the memory fix, so i'm thinking maybe my motherboard or even the Powerleap adapter isn't playing nice with the RAM maxed out? I'm now running 512MB with no issues at all.

Working on a slow computer can be a real drag. Before you buy a completely new one, however, you should consider ways to. One more thing to consider before you go ahead with this process is that PAE has been reported as having some difficulties working with in the past.

You know, I'm not sure it technically count as running with more than 1GB memory, if you're actually limiting the memory and not using it. I'm not sure if it's possible to actually get more than 1GB memory used by 9x, I'm not even sure which file you'd have to patch (probably a vxd), but it would be pretty cool if someone ever found out. The point is that when you put more than 1GB of RAM in a PC with Windows 9x, problems start to occur even when limiting the amount of RAM by using MaxPhysPage. Various other parameters or drivers are generally needed to become stable.

I certainly haven't seen any indication that my system now speaks German in any of the dialog menus anywhere. Rlo.@gmail.com 6/12/2015, 19:40 น.
The unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a was certainly a worthwhile install on my 98SE computer (running more than 512 MB of RAM). However, Service Pack 2.1a is also available from, as well as downloads of additional and more recent updates. Service Pack 2.1a does not include security and other updates for Internet Explorer. Thus, also consider downloading the 'Unofficial Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Cumulative' 7-24-2010 update available from. There are several discussions of 98SE's RAM limitations on this forum. View by entering '98SE RAM limitation' in the MSFN Search field.
